<p>Formerly known as Altus Army Airfield until closed in May 1945. Reopened in March 1953 under TAC control with the 63rd Troop Carried Wing in residence. The 96th BW was assigned in November 1953 and transferred to SAC in June 1954. Various other SAC units were stationed until July 1968, when the base came under MAC control. The 443rd MAW (later 443rd AW) took up residence in May 1969, followed by the 340th ARG in July 1977. The 97th AMW was formed in October 1992 under AETC to replace both units. The facility conducts C-5, KC-135 and C-141 aircrew training as well as conventional airlift duties.
